About Endodontic Microsurgery

Endodontic microsurgery is the fusion of the magnification, illumination, and visualization provided by cutting-edge tools—such as the dental operating microscope and new micro instruments—with the time-tested surgical techniques used during most oral surgery procedures. It is used as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, endodontic retreatment, addressing issues such as recurring pain or non-healing infection following a root canal procedure.

Endodontic microsurgery is performed with such precision that it virtually removes the assumption inherent in traditional endodontic surgery, allowing for better, quicker healing with less postoperative discomfort.

Microsurgery Preparation

Prior to your procedure, x-rays are taken of the affected tooth and surrounding bone. Prior to your surgery, you will be provided with an antimicrobial mouth rinse, a medicine to reduce inflammation, and/or antibiotics.

We will go over your medical history and all medications that you are currently taking. Depending on your general health and other existing medical conditions, we may further consult with your primary physician.

How is Endodontic Microsurgery Performed

An incision is made in your gum tissue, exposing the bone and the surrounding inflamed and infected tissue. The infected tissue will be removed along with the last few millimeters of the root top. A root-end filling may be placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone will naturally heal around the root over a period of several months to restore full function of the tooth.

What to Expect After Endodontic Microsurgery

You will feel mild-to-moderate discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. We will prescribe pain medication for the pain and discomfort. However, if you have any pain that fails to respond to the prescribed pain medication, please call our office as soon as possible.
